Nearly Bt3b budget to fund Thailand's referendum

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - The Cabinet is expected to soon approve a state budget of nearly three billion baht to fund a referendum on Thailand's new Constitution draft in mid-2016. An election commissioner, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, told journalists, after a meeting of the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) on April 11, that the meeting agreed on the 2.991 billion baht budget to be used for organising the public referendum. Somchai said the Thai Cabinet, at its weekly meeting at Bangkok's Government House on Tuesday, is expected to consider the budget, proposed by his election agency. Somchai insisted there will be no amendment on an extra question posted by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA). The election commissioner admitted that the length of the extra question could confuse the public, but his election agency has to organise the proposed referendum. According to the election commissioner, NLA will have to make the people understand on the content of the extra question, while members of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) has to explain to the public on the content of Thailand's new Charter draft. Regarding details of the card used for the public referendum, the election commissioner noted that EC will discuss them at its next meeting on April 18, together with deciding on the date for holding the referendum.
