Nepal premier: NAM should not remain indifferent vis-a-vis injustices

Tehran, Aug 31, IRNA - Nepal Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai said on Friday that restoration of peace and equality are among the main goals of the Non-Aligned Movement and the world body should not remain indifferent vis-a-vis injustices in the international community. Speaking to IRNA, on the second day of the 16th NAM Summit of Leaders, he said Nepal believes in NAM's principles and has endorsed the body's Charter. "We should meet basic demands of our nations and strongly deal with colonialism and the pressures exerted by some western governments respectively," he said. The contemporary world is suffering from systematic injustice, he said adding that there are numerous conflicts and wars in the world and other crises in the fields of economy, energy and that the climate change has exacerbated the situation. NAM formed when many countries were endeavoring to attain their independence from occupiers, and the movement raised hope among nations, he said. He called for putting an end to the continued violence in the occupied Palestinian lands and Syria. "We should find new mechanism to promote and restore peace in the international community and to attain the goal it is necessary to consider UN Charter as well as international law and principles," he said. ""Peace will be restored when multilateralism to be observed in governance of the international community, he said, calling for campaign against terrorism, organized crimes, weapons of mass destruction and nuclear arms."" Expansion of cooperation between South-South and North-South could lead to expansion of economic capacity of nations and bring about economic justice, he said. He called on the developed countries to remain committed to their pledges on allocation of some part of their Gross Domestic Products (GDP) to poor countries. He called for rehabilitation of women, due attention to the issue of climate change, adopting practical approaches to advance economic and social development, protecting the environment and rendering assistance to the needy countries. He said that NAM can play a very effective role in global scene, he said adding that NAM is the voice of the nations whose voices are not heard and power for those in need. With this policy it should enhance its ability to help administer justice and restore peace in the world. The 16th NAM Summit was inaugurated here Thursday with a speech by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
