New edition of Quran in Diwani calligraphy revealed in New Delhi

TEHRAN,Jan.30(MNA)– A new edition of the Holy Quran, which has been inscribed in Diwani, a calligraphic variety of Arabic script, was unveiled during a ceremony at the Cultural Center of the Islamic Public of Iran in New Delhi on Monday. Indian calligrapher Sarfaraz Ahmed khan has spent eight months inscribing and illuminating the Quran on textile. Diwani is a cursive style of Arabic script that was developed during the reign of the early Ottoman Turks in the 16th and early 17th centuries. Iranian Ambassador Gholamreza Ansari, a group of Indian clerics and scholars attended the ceremony. Inscribing the Holy Quran has been sponsored by Iran’s Noor Microfilm Center in New Delhi. The center has been established in India to support cultural cooperation between Iran and the country. The Holy Quran has been written in calligraphy on 60 textile pages each measuring 280x180 centimeters.
