New Pier in Bangkok to serve commuters in mid-Sept

BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - In an attempt to facilitate commuters in Bangkok, the Thai Ministry of Transport plans to open a new pier at the Saen Saeb Canal in the capital by mid September 2015. Thai Permanent Secretary for Transport Soithip Trisuddhi told journalists of the plan on Tuesday, after a meeting with senior officials of relevant transport agencies. Soithip said the new pier is about 150 metres away from Khlong Ton Pier and about 300 metres from Ramkhamhaeng Road. According to the senior official, the general public will be soon invited to join in a contest to name the new pier and an improvement will then be made from nearby bus stops to the new pier, which is expected to be completed by September 4, timely for the planned opening of the new pier for public service in mid-September. A private firm which rents the land in the area from the state-run State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is expected to invest in the new pier project, aimed to provide conveniences to bus commuters travelling along Ramkhamhaeng Road. Once it is opened for public use, the senior official estimated, a minimum of 1,800 people should travel daily by using the new pier. (TNA)
