New Round of Registration of Migrant Workers in Thailand’s Fishing Industry Starts Monday

BANGKOK, Nov 1 (TNA) - A new round of registration of migrant workers from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia in the Thai fishing industry will open from Monday November 2, 2015 until January 30, 2016 , Arak Prommanee, director-general of the Labour Ministry’s Department of Employment said on Sunday. The first round of registration of migrant workers from the three countries took place between April 1 – June 29, 2015 in a total of 22 coastal provinces by the Thai government. It was aimed at solving labour shortage in the fishing industry and to prevent illegal entry by migrant workers. Expenses on registration for each migrant worker will be 500 baht for medical checkup, 1,600 baht for health insurance, 1,000 baht for working permit and 80 baht for biography record . Employers who failed to register their migrant workers within the specified period will face a fine between 10,000 – 100,000 baht per one worker. Migrant workers who do not register themselves will face a maximum imprisonment of five years or a fine between 2,000 – 100,000 baht or both, said Mr. Arak. (TNA)
