Newspapers Hail Qatar's Announcement to Hold UAE Accountable for Violations against Qatar

Doha, June 12 (QNA) - Qatari newspapers highlighted Tuesday the Government of the State of Qatar's announcement to take legal action against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before the International Court of Justice on the basis that it planned and led the actions of the siege countries which have had a devastating effect on the human rights of Qataris. The newspapers stressed that this step comes within the efforts of Qatar to confront the unjust siege and bring perpetrators to the international judicial institutions. In their editorials today, the Qatari dailies said that UAE's serious violations of human rights will not go unnoticed, pointing out that Qatar took this action to hold the siege countries accountable, put an end to these violations and restore rights. For its part, Al-Sharq newspaper said that the UAE played the main role in this unjust siege, so it was normal that it is the first wanted for the international justice, adding that Abu Dhabi regime sought to create a Gulf sedition and now it is time for it to pay the price. The UAE led these actions, which have had a devastating effect on the human rights of Qataris and residents of Qatar, even though they are in violation of the UAEs obligations under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD), the paper said. The newspaper pointed out that these illegal measures have torn families apart, deprived Qatari companies and individuals of their properties and denied fundamental access to education, medicine, and justice in the UAE courts. In conclusion, Al-Sharq said that these procedures are a message to the Qatari people and residents that their rights are reserved, and a message to the siege countries that Qatar will not stand idly by, adding that Qatar, which has achieved international status among nations for decades, will not lose it because of the childishness of the countries of the siege. Al-Watan Qatari daily said that the comprehensive Qatari confrontation of the unjust siege went in all directions in order to hold accountable those conspirators against the State of Qatar and its innocent people and expose the evil planners in the siege countries to the whole world. The paper noted the great diplomatic efforts made in this regard, as well as the intensive movements of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the concerned Qatari institutions to bring the perpetrators before the international judicial institutions. The State of Qatar has taken legal actions against the UAE before the International Court of Justice in relation to its continuing human rights violations against Qatar and Qatari citizens by imposing, along with other countries, an unlawful land, sea and air siege against Qatar as part of a political and economic campaign, Al-Watan daily said. The paper pointed out that, as set forth in detail in Qatar's Application to the International Court, the UAE led these actions, which have had a devastating effect on the human rights of Qataris and residents of Qatar, even though they are in violation of the UAE's obligations under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD). The newspaper said that UAE's discriminatory measures included collectively expelling all Qataris from the UAE, prohibiting Qataris from entering into or passing through the UAE, ordering UAE nationals to leave Qatar, discriminating against Qatari students in the UAE, closing UAE airspace and seaports to Qatar. The paper added that UAE officials also actively participated in a full-scale media campaign against Qatar and Qataris, directly inciting hate speech in violation of international law. In conclusion, Al-Watan stressed that UAE's serious violations of human rights will not pass unnoticed and that conspirators will reap the results sooner. For its part, Qatari daily Al-Raya affirmed that the announcement of the Government of the State of Qatar to take the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the International Court of Justice - the principal judicial organ of the United Nations and also known as the World Court - came from the premise that the UAE planned and led the measures of the siege countries against the people of Qatar. The UAE has also led the systematic campaigns of incitement against Qatar's leadership, government and people, the daily said adding that the UAE's actions have been decried by numerous independent human rights organizations. The Qatari daily said that the State of Qatar has the right to take the UAE to the International Court of Justice due to the illegal measures imposed by the siege countries which planned and led by the UAE and even though they are in violation of the obligations under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD). UAE's actions have been decried by numerous independent human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Reporters Without Borders, the paper added. Al-Raya stressed that the UAE is responsible for the negative impacts of the unjust siege as it enacted a series of measures that discriminate against Qataris during the illegal blockade. These measures included collectively expelling all Qataris from the UAE, prohibiting Qataris from entering into or passing through the UAE, ordering UAE nationals to leave Qatar, closing UAE airspace and seaports to Qatar, interfering with property owned by Qataris in the UAE and discriminating against Qatari students in the UAE. UAE also criminalized any speech deemed to be in "support" of Qatar, shut down Al Jazeera local offices, and blocked transmission of Qatari stations and websites, therefore, the UAE is directly responsible for all violations committed against the Qatari people, the paper said. The State of Qatar has the legal and legitimate right to take the UAE to the International Court of Justice and also request that the UAE make full reparation, including compensation especially that UAE officials actively participated in a full-scale media campaign against Qatar and Qataris, directly inciting hate speech. In conclusion, Al-Raya said that the violations and unlawful measures imposed by UAE have torn apart families, deprived Qatari companies and individuals of property and assets and denied fundamental access to education, medicine, and justice in the UAE courts. In light of the urgency and continuing nature of these violations, Qatar's Application requests that the Court order the UAE to take all steps necessary to comply with its obligations under the CERD, the paper said adding that Qatar also requests that the UAE make full reparation, including compensation, for the harm suffered as a result of the UAE's violations of CERD.
