NHRC condemns Friday's car bomb attack in Thai far South

YALA, July 26 (TNA) - The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has issued a statement condemning Friday’s (Jul 25) car bomb attack in Thailand's southernmost Betong District in Yala Province, which left three people killed and more than 40 wounded. Charging that the barbarous act is tantamount to severely violating human rights, the NHRC statement, issued on Saturday (Jul 26) morning, said the attack was illegal, violated every religion's teachings and was against the universal human rights principle. Local police reported that Friday afternoon's car bomb attack in Betong occurred for the first time over the past eight years and they were checking from surveillance cameras on hope who the bomb planters were. The attack took place while Thai Muslims are planning to celebrate the Hari Raya on Sunday (Jul 27), marking the end of their annual Ramadan fast. According to the local police, the bomb was hidden in a cooking gas cylinder which was on a stolen pick-up truck and parked in front of the Holiday Hill Hotel and the powerful explosive was then detonated remotely. Eyewitnesses told police that they saw a van picked up a suspicious bomber and drove away shortly before the bomb exploded. In another Friday's (Jul 25) violent incident in the Thai deep South, two soldiers were wounded after a bomb exploded while they were patrolling in a village in Rue Soh area of nearby Narathiwat Province. In response to the bomb attacks ahead of the Hari Raya celebrations, police in Hat Yai, Thailand's southern business hub in Songkhla Province, have stepped up patrolling in the district in order to create confidence among local people and international tourists, mostly Malaysians and Singaporeans although hotel rooms in Hat Yai have already been fully booked.
