NIHR committee holds meeting

Manama, Oct.9 (BNA): The National Institute for Human Rights (NIHR) Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee convened for its 6th ordinary meeting. Chaired by Maria Khouri, the panel also includes Dr. Hameed Ahmed Hussain as member. The committee discussed demands submitted by the families of inmates, seeking the assistance of the watchdog regarding the possibility for relevant authorities to pardon their convicted relatives who served part of their jail terms and who meet the conditions of the amnesty. The panel also discussed a number of complaints which were submitted recently and took the adequate decisions. It reviewed reports on court cases which were followed-up and attended by the watchdog to assess their compliance with international conventions. The committee has also decided to attend the second session of the trial of Wefaq Islamic Society secretary-general due on October 14 before the first instance of the High Criminal Court of Appeal. The panel will convene on November 9. .
