No casualties, damages, tsunami warning from earthquake in Thai South

PHANG-NGA, THAILAND, May 6 (TNA) - A 4.6-magnitude earthquake rocked coastal Andaman areas in the Thai South on early Wednesday morning, but there were no reports of casualties and damages and there was no tsunami warning. The earthquake was recorded in Phang-nga Province and felt by locals and those in nearby Phuket and Krabi Provinces, especially those living near the sea and those on high rises in Phang-nga. The Seismological Bureau of Thailand's Meteorological Department reported that it detected the quake at 4 kilometers underground south of Yao Yai Island in Phang-nga's Koh Yao District at 4:18am. Phuket Governor Nisit Chansomwong told reporters that the sea level remained normal after the quake and there were no reports of damages. The governor assured the effectiveness of local warning systems, including 19 tsunami alarm towers in areas at risk, stressing that such facilities were regularly maintained. Local residents appeared not to be panic, while vendors were selling goods to shoppers as usual at their morning markets. On Phi Phi Islands in adjacent Krabi Province, people first evacuated to high ground for safety for tsunami fear, but they returned after about an hour, while foreign tourists expressed no concerns.
