No Indication Of Heightened ISIS Threat To S'pore - DPM

By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah SINGAPORE, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- There is no indication of a heightened threat to Singapore, specific to the island nation's support for the coalition against the ISIS militant group, says Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean. However, he noted the violence in Syria and Iraq continued, and raised the overall threat level in every country. He said the militant group still attracted extremists and encouraged its overseas supporters to carry out attacks on home soil, using all available means. "In the past six months, we have seen 'lone-wolf' attacks in North America, Europe and Australia," said Teo, who is also home affairs minister, in an oral reply to a parliamentary question here Thursday. He was asked whether the ministry had detected any heightened threat to Singapore, following Singapore's deployment of troops to support the coalition against ISIS, and whether additional measures were required to address issues of self-radicalisation. "We take stringent measures to protect ourselves from any individual, local or foreign, who poses a terrorism threat to Singapore; or who intends to use Singapore to carry out terrorism-related activities. "This includes denying a foreign individual entry into Singapore. Our security agencies will continue to take the necessary measures to prevent a terrorist attack from happening here. "However, there is no guarantee these measures will always succeed," he said. -- BERNAMA
