No Reports Of Malaysians Arrested Or Injured In Hong Kong Protests

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian consulate general in Hong Kong on Wednesday confirmed there had been no report of Malaysians having been injured or arrested in the protests there. The Foreign Ministry, in a statement, said Malaysians in Hong Kong had been advised to be extra vigilant and to take all necessary precautions for their personal safety by avoiding the various sites of the assembly and large public gatherings to avoid any untoward incidents. "It is also advisable for Malaysians travelling to Hong Kong to inform the Consulate General of Malaysia of their presence in the country. The Malaysian Consulate General is in close contact with the Hong Kong authorities to provide regular updates on the situation," it said. Malaysians who require assistance can contact the Consulate General of Malaysia on the 24th Floor, Malaysia Building, 47-50 Gloucester Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong, by telephone +852-69006390 or e-mail malhkong@kln.gov.my. The student-led unrest was sparked by China's insistence that it vet candidates for a 2017 election in Hong Kong even though residents in Hong Kong had been promised that they would be able to freely elect their leaders. --BERNAMA
