No special measures to punish violators in Thailand

BANGKOK, June 7 (TNA) - The Thai army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has no plan to issue extraordinary measures to oversee peace and order in the country in the lead-up to a public referendum on a new Constitution draft, scheduled for August 7, 2016. NCPO Deputy Spokeswoman Colonel Sirichan Nga-thong told journalists of the junta's stance on June 6, affirming that existing ordinary laws remain in place to deal with people violating NCPO’s orders. Regarding a recent opening of a centre to monitor fraud in the August 7 public referendum on the new Constitution draft by the red-clad United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), the deputy spokeswoman said NCPO also still has no plan to issue any special measure to deal with UDD. Touching on criticisms by a key member of the Pheu Thai Party Watana Muangsook, who is also a former minister of many portfolios, the deputy spokeswoman stated that Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha, who is also NCPO Chief, accepts criticisms which do not tarnish any person or organization. For the current suppression of influential persons across the country, the NCPO deputy spokeswoman noted that Thai Army Chief General Teerachai Nakvanich has ordered the National Peacekeeping Force to cooperate with police in the continuation of the suppression.
