No Thai casualties reported in Taiwan quake

BANGKOK, Feb 6 (TNA) -- There were no reports on Thai casualties in a powerful earthquake in Taiwan by early Saturday which had killed at least five persons and more than 30 others feared trapped. The tragic incident occurred after the 6.4-magnitude quake struck in the middle of the night and left a huge destruction behind the city of Tainan which bore the brunt of the damage. Tainan city is located some 317 kilometres south of the Taiwanese capital of Taipei. Currently, there are 65,785 Thais living in Taiwan of which 5,080 Thais are now staying in Tainan. According to Thailand’s Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee, the quake which took place just before the Lunar New Year celebrations on Monday had destroyed several buildings while more than 100 persons were rescued from damaged buildings. Mr Sek said at least 47 people were injured while Thailand Trade and Economic Office in Taipei had informed that there were no Thais casualties reported in the incident in the initial investigation. He said Thai workers in Taiwan who needed assistance could do so by contacting the Office in Taipei. Thailand’s Labour Minister Gen Sirichai Ditthakul had ordered the Thai Labour Office in Taiwan to closely monitor the situation and to also provide assistance to Thai workers who were affected from the natural disaster.
