No Thai fatality reported in Malaysia's bus crash

BANGKOK, August 22 (TNA) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that no Thai people were among those reported deaths from a bus crash in neighbouring Malaysia on Wednesday. Jakkrit Srivali, Deputy Director General of the ministry's Department of Information, confirmed on Thursday, nonetheless, that a Thai citizen was injured from the Malaysian bus accident and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of KL Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital. Jakkrit told reporters that the Thai man, initially identified as 63-year-old Wong Teerapong, had a slight wound on his face, a broken left arm and a broken right hip, but he was conscious though unresponsive. According to the senior official, the Thai Embassy to Malaysia has closely monitored his condition and contacted his family in Thailand. The senior official insisted that no Thai nationals were among the death toll of the Genting tragedy, which has reached 24, based on updated reports on August 22, acknowledging that the bus driver was killed in the crash, but an official probe on the cause of the accident has been continuing. Preliminary reports indicated that the bus was overloaded, as there were 53 passengers on board whereas the vehicle’s capacity is only 44 passengers. The ill-fated bus plunged into a deep ravine while on its way to Genting Highlands, a wellknown gambling and entertainment resort in Malaysia, on August 21. (TNA)
