No Thais in hostage standoff at Kenya shopping mall

BANGKOK, September 22 (TNA) - There are no Thais mingled in an ongoing hostage standoff between gunmen and Kenyan security forces at an upscale shopping mall in Nairobi, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Jakkrit Srivali, deputy director-general of the ministry’s Information Department cited a report sent by the Royal Thai Embassy in Nairobi, as saying on Sunday that there were no Thais mingled in the supermarket shooting rampage which is still continuing. It was still difficult to assess the situation, he said, adding that Thais wishing to travel to Kenya should monitor the situation closely before making a journey. There were more than 100 Thais staying in Kenya presently, said Jakkrit. The hostage standoff began around Saturday noon and, according to Kenyan police, the gunmen had killed at least 59 people and injured more than 200 others. (TNA)
