No Thais live in quake-hit areas in Chile

BANGKOK, April 2 (TNA) - The Thai Embassy to Chile reports that its initial probe has found no Thai nationals living in areas affected by a powerful earthquake hitting the South American country on Tuesday night (local time). The Thai Embassy in Santiago has, however, advised all Thais living in Chile to closely follow up official announcements and to heed the Chilean government's instructions for the sake of their safety. According to University of Chile's Seismological Service, a magnitude-8.3 earthquake rocked the Pacific Ocean off South America near northern Chilean coast at 8:46pm on Tuesday (local time), with its epicentre located at a depth of 44 kilometres and some 99 kilometres northwest of Iquique, a mining port in Chile, near the border with Peru, leading to at least 10 strong aftershocks, including a 6.2-magnitude one, and causing a tsunami and an evacuation of more than 10,000 people in some coastal areas, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Earlier, the Tsunami Warning Centre in the Pacific issued a tsunami warning for three countries, including Chile, Peru and Ecuador, and a surveillant suggestion for three other nearby countries.
