NRC Chairman: 2 Years Not Enough for National Reconciliation

BANGKOK, March 22 (TNA) – Thailand’s National Reform Council (NRC) chairman Tienchai Kirananda, who is responsible for finding ways and means for building national reconciliation, has admitted that two years would be insufficient for forming reconciliation in Thailand unless every concerned party forgets the past before a general election is held. In an exclusive interview with the Thai News Agency, Mr. Tienchai said he personally believed it was unnecessary to specify reconciliation-planning in the charter as special law could be issued. The reason that it was written in the charter because several concerned parties feared that a new round of debate could erupt after a new government is formed following the next general election which could result in a fresh conflict, he said. The fresh general election is expected to be held in early 2016. Domestic problems have been accumulated for a long time and they need a sufficient time for resolving, said Mr. Tienchai, adding that it is necessary to bring conflicting parties to sit down, talk and settle problems through compromise otherwise reconciliation could not be achieved. The current caretaker government should settle this crux first before dissolving itself, he said. “But this’s difficult because of time which is limited. At least the general atmosphere ought to improve slightly before a general election is held,” said Mr. Tienchai. Stressing that no form of cheating should be seen in the next election, he said national reconciliation could be divided into two categories, through a pardon and through a royal amnesty. The NRC has set up a working committee headed by its member Anek Laothamatas to help in promoting national reconciliation in which considerable progress has been made, Mr. Tienchai said. He declined to provide details, saying new conditions could be made by concerned conflicting parties if they are disclosed publicly. (TNA)
