NUMBER OF FLIGHTS CANCELLED DUE TO FIRE AT SOEKARNO-HATTA AIRPORT

Jakarta, July 5 (Antara) - A number of Garuda Indonesia flights from and to Soekarno-Hatta international airport in Jakarta were cancelled due to a fire at the airport Sunday morning. "Due to the fire at Terminal 2 of the Soetta (Soekarno-Hatta airport), four flights from Juanda Surabaya have been canceled," port operator Angkasa Pura secretary Farid Indra Nugraha said. He said some Garuda flights from Soetta airport to Juanda were also cancelled. "Several passengers of SUB-CGK (Surabaya-Cengkareng) have also been moved to other airliners including Citilink and Lion Air," he said. He said Garuda flight GA 407 from Bali had also been canceled and the flight was taken over by GA 413. "Some other GA flights have been delayed," he said. The fire occurred at around 5 a.m. local time when employees of JW Sky Lounge rushed out due to smoke coming out from the lounge. At around 6 a.m. a light explosion was heard from the lounge while security staff members trying to reach the source of smoke were unable to approach the location due to a visibility problem caused by the smoke. All passengers at the lounge were evacuated while firefighters kept trying to reach the source of the smoke. The thick smoke producing smell like burned wires covered Baggage E and F areas. At around 6.10am a fire engine came and fire fighters entered through the lounge glass window and at 6.30am a staff member was taken out of the lounge. "We do not know yet the real cause of the fire. Police forensic laboratory workers are still investigating it," Brigadier Wahyu, a duty officer at the airport's police service center said. He said the airport authorities had moved check in process at Terminal 2D and2F. "Terminal 2D and 2F are operating well. So passengers have been taken there," he said.
