Number of Turkish citizens living in Germany down 1.7 pct

BERLIN (A.A) - The number of Turkish citizens residing in Germany was down 1.7 percent year-on-year in 2010, the German federal statistics department said on Thursday.
A department statement said the number of Turks living in Germany dropped 28,600 in 2010 over 2009 to 1,063,000.
The number of Turks residing in Germany was 2.1 million in 1998. After 1998, the number of Turks living in this country started to decline because some Turks became German citizens, left the country or died.
There were 6.75 million foreigners from 188 countries living in Germany in 2010. 36 percent of them were citizens of EU member states, and 29 of them were from EU candidate countries including Turkey, Croatia, Macedonia and Montenegro. 15 percent of them were from other European countries, 12 of them were from Asia, 4 of them were from Africa and 3 of them were from America.
Turks constituted the biggest group of foreigners in Germany with 24 percent. Italians followed Turks with 8 percent and the third biggest foreign nationality in Germany was Polish.
