OIC Secretary-General Urges Member States To Assist Yemenis

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) -- Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary-General, Iyad Ameen Madani has urged its member states and civil society organisations to provide humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people. The OIC in a statement Monday said its General Secretariat had consulted several civil society bodies and humanitarian organisations for assistance, especially medical, food and humanitarian aid to enable them to overcome the worsening political and security crisis in Yemen. "The General Secretariat is also consulting with United Nations agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent to take urgent steps to alleviate the plight of the Yemeni people and to consider the steps to be taken in the medium term," he said while commending the assistance provided by some government and charitable organisations. The situation in Yemen became turbulent after Saudi troops accompanied by the Gulf coalition forces launched a military operation to rescue the government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi from fratricidal conflict. Meanwhile, Iyad Ameen strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Sinai, Egypt on Sunday that caused death and injuries to army and police personnel and civilians. He also offered condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those wounded in the tragedy a speedy recovery. Iyad Ameen also expressed the OIC's support for Egypt to achieve security and stability. --BERNAMA
