Osteoporosis Risk In Indonesia Quite High

Jakarta, Nov 4 (Antara) - The risk of osteoporosis, which causes a reduction in bone mineral density, is quite high in Indonesia, particularly among women with an inactive lifestyle, an official said. Women are the most vulnerable to osteoporosis if they lead a sedentary lifestyle and don`t consume calcium-rich foods or don`t exercise, remarked Paul Richards, the president director of Fonterra Brands Indonesia in a written statement here on Sunday. "Therefore, it is important for Indonesians, especially women, to be properly educated on osteoporosis and its prevention by consuming foods containing plenty of calcium," Richards noted. Citing the 2005 data provided by the Ministry of Health, he said two of five Indonesians are at risk of exposure to osteoporosis, and therefore, Fonterra, in cooperation with Jakarta`s district administration, has conducted educational workshops on the disease in six areas across Jakarta. Besides this, Richards said they had also conducted bone scans and osteoporosis care at every village in Jakarta in an effort to remove all instances of this bone disease. "We made the effort to free Jakarta from osteoporosis through awareness campaigns and education, and if the program is successful, we will do the same thing in other parts of Indonesia," Richards noted. He stated that Fonterra will conduct osteoporosis education campaigns in Bali, Batam, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, and Pekanbaru, among other places in Indonesia. "We are optimistic that we will realize a better future for the Indonesian people, making them healthy and free from osteoporosis," he added.
