Over 1,400 houses in Thai North hit by tropical storm

BANGKOK, March 31 (TNA) - Thousands of homes in Thailand’s northernmost province of Chiang Rai stayed in darkness on Saturday night after a fierce tropical storm knocked down high electricity poles and damaged more than 1,400 houses in seven districts. Officials said at least 11 high voltage electricity poles were knocked down while repairs were expected to complete Sunday evening. Meanwhile, the haze situation in the North, especially in Lamphun province had remained critical more than a week as the amount of dust particles had exceeded the safe level of 120 microgrammes per cubic metre. Air quality in several provinces in the North had reportedly been poor for more than a month due to slash and burn activities, including haze blown from Thailand’s neighbouring countries. (TNA)
