Over 20,000 rais of encroached forests reclaimed in Thailand in 2014

BANGKOK, September 4 (TNA) - Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, has taken back over 20,000 rais of encroached forests across the country in 2014. The department's deputy director-general, Thanya Netithammakul, told journalists on Thursday that more than 50 per cent, or over 10,000 out of 20,000 rais, of the encroached Thai forests are in Nakhon Ratchasima Province in the Thai Northeast. Thanya reported that his department, in cooperation with soldiers on patrols, has arrested 132 suspects and seized over 2,200 Siamese rosewood logs from a total of 216 cases nationwide so far this year. According to the senior official, his department plans to supply forest officers with better weapons and defence training, as well as to launch more research projects to enhance their potential in conserving Thai forests and preventing encroachment more effectively in the future.
