Over 50 people injured in Thailand's train crash

AYUTTHAYA, THAILAND, March 27 (TNA) - Two trains collided in Ayutthaya Province in the Thai central region on Thursday night, injuring over 50 people. State Railway of Thailand (SRT) mechanics were busy moving a locomotive and three bogeys off a railway at the scene, following the incident, in which most injured people have been discharged from hospitals so far. The incident took place at about 10:15pm, when an express train travelling from Bangkok to Nong Khai Province in the Thai Northeast awaited for a stopover at the railway station in Ayutthaya’s Phachi District, but the train was hit from behind by another northbound train travelling from Bangkok to Denchai District in the northern Phrae Province. By Friday morning, only seven injured passengers remained in hospitals, while the rest had left hospitals. SRT officials expected that salvaging the derailed trains should finish by Friday afternoon. However, there has been no disruption in passenger train services on northern and northeastern routes because trains can travel on the parallel track. Meanwhile, SRT Governor Wuthichart Kalayanamitr was inspecting the scene and visiting injured passengers, while Chaichan Khokdokmai, Ayutthaya railway station master, reported that concerned officials were probing on the cause of the incident.
