Overall Situation in Bangkok Is Calm, Says NCPO

BANGKOK, August 23 (TNA) - The overall situation in Bangkok is calm while two people have been arrested on charges of forwarding information on social media concerning the bombing incidents early last week, causing confusion among the public, said Colonel Winthai Suvaree, spokesman of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). Col. Winthai said a person was apprehended in Bangkok while another was arrested in Ayutthaya province, near Bangkok. Police are taking legal actions against them. Regarding police investigation concerning Monday’s massive bombing near the Brahmin statue at the Erawan Shrine on Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok and bombing at Sathon pier the following day, Col. Winthai said the Royal Thai Police had informed NCPO that sufficient progress had been made. At least 20 people, mostly foreigners, were killed while more than 120 others wounded. No casualties were reported in the bombing incident at Sathon pier. Col. Winthai said the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has cooperated with the Justice Ministry in offering financial aid to relatives of 16 persons – 14 foreigners and two Thais -- who died in the Monday’s blast. Relatives of some 100 wounded victims had requested for financial assistance in which money would be given to them at a later date. By early Sunday a total of 52 wounded people remained hospitalised at several hospitals in Bangkok, said Winthai. (TNA)
