PCD promotes use of natural materials to make kratongs

BANGKOK, Nov 21 (TNA) -- The Pollution Control Department (PCD) suggested that kratongs or floating banana leave vessels be made up of natural materials, and for the public to refrain from using Styrofoam, plastic, as well as bread to make them. The department also noted that Thailand now ranks 6th in the world for wastes dumping at sea. PCD director-general Wijarn Simachaya said that the problems of wastes is the most inportant in Thailand, as the country has been ranked in the 6th place for gaving the most wastes dumped at sea, off to China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. He said the problem of plastic and Styrofoam wastes is vital, because they take a long time to deteriorate. Meanwhile, Thailand is also having problem with wastes increase both on land and at sea at various tourist destinations, said the director-general, noting that if more wastes are generated by the kratong floated during the featival into the sea, the problem of wastes could be further accumulated. Mr Wijarn said as a way to continue the Thai traditions and preseve the environment, the PCD would like to invite the public to enjoy the Loy Kratong Festival under the theme, Loy Kratong and save the environment, where communities and concerned agencies are encouraged to promote to the public to use natural materials to make kratongs, as they would easily deteriorate. And to help reduce the problem of water pollution, the PCS has advised the public to use the 3Rs principle of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. (TNA)
