PEA introduces electric bus, targets all Thai households to access to power service by 2015

BANGKOK, September 11 (TNA) - Thailand's Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) has introduced the first locally-developed electric passenger bus and targeted that all provincial households nationwide will access to its power service by 2015. PEA Governor Numchai Lowattanatakul presided over a ceremony to introduce the pollution-free PEA Ze-bus and its charging station in the compound of the PEA head office in Bangkok on Thursday. The prototyped 43-seat electric bus was jointly produced by the PEA's technological research and development fund and Suranaree University of Technology in Nakhon Ratchasima Province in the Thai Northeast and it is considered the first Thailand-made commercial electric bus. The environmentally-friendly PEA Ze-bus also has a low floor to serve persons with disabilities (PWDs) and it is equipped with the Internet and the Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking system. The PEA will continue testing the bus over the next six months and, if results are satisfactory, it will begin to use the pollution-free PEA Ze-bus to serve its staffs next year and will later campaign for the commercial use of the electric bus, which can halve energy costs, compared with existing oil-powered buses. Meanwhile, PEA Deputy Governor Sathit Rungjirathananon told journalists that the PEA has expanded its electricity service system to now cover over 99 per cent of areas under its jurisdiction in 74 Thai provinces and targeted all provincial households nationwide will access to the PEA's power service by 2015, marking the 54th anniversary celebrations of the PEA, which also include the PEA's further development of its provincial power service to sustain its efficiency, energy security and reliability, as well as to provide conveniences and swiftness to the public.
