People travel back for work after long New Year holiday

BANGKOK, Jan 2 (TNA) - Thailand's holiday goers have traveled back for work nationwide, a large number of whom have arrived in Bangkok, after the five-day long New Year holiday from December 28, 2013-January 1, 2014. In the capital, the main Mo Chit bus terminal remained crowded on Thursday morning, as people were returning from their holiday destinations or hometowns, prompting the government-run Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) to provide free buses for them to two areas, the Victory Monument and the Mo Chit Skytrain, or BTS, Station, to alleviate the problem of the taxi shortage and congestion at the bus terminal during the prime time, as most people were heading straight to work. Meanwhile, updated statistics released by the Road Safety Directing Center (RSDC), run by the Thai Ministry of Interior's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, showed that a total of 334 people were killed and 3,041 others were injured from a total of 2,891 road accidents nationwide during the six days of “Seven Dangerous Days" of New Year travels in Thailand, set from December 27, 2013-January 2, 2014, with fatalities and injuries on the sixth day alone standing at 68 and 539 respectively from 536 road accidents nationwide. According to the RSDC, the main causes of the road accidents during the six-day period remained drunk driving and speeding, while motorcycles topped the list for having the most accidents, as most motorcyclists facing the accidents did not wear helmets.
