People urged to preserve Thai literature

BANGKOK, June 26 (TNA) - Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has called on the public to preserve the Thai literature, which is a major national heritage under the country's three main institutions of nation, religions and monarchy. Deputy Government Spokesman Lieutenant General Werachon Sukondhapatipak told journalists on Wednesday that the prime minister made the call as the Kingdom observes the "Sunthorn Phu Day", which falls on every June 26, the birthday anniversary of Phra Sunthonwohan, or Sunthorn Phu, who is a most renowned royal Thai poet in the present Rattanakosin Era. The deputy spokesman stated that the premier advised the Thai people to learn on the worthy background and works of "Sunthorn Phu", who lived during the first four reigns of the present Chakri Dynasty but has been praised by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world significant personality in literature. The deputy spokesman quoted the Thai prime minister as mentioning that "Sunthorn Phu" should be an inspiring idol of Thai students and the general public for being an individual who deeply concentrated on his talent and proficiency towards his greatest success and perpetual fame. Meanwhile, the deputy spokesman also quoted the prime minister as proclaiming that the Thai language and literature are masterpieces among the national heritages Thai people should proudly preserve and sustain all the time, in parallel with the continuous national development in all other spheres.
