Petition on annulling Feb 2 election turned down

BANGKOK, February 7 (TNA) - A petition lodged by a former Democrat Party MP, requesting the Office of the Ombudsman to consider whether Thailand's February 2 general election is against the Constitution and should be annulled has been turned down. Raksakecha Chaechai, Deputy Secretary-General of the Office of the Ombudsman, told reporters of the decision on Friday, saying the request could not be considered after his office's members discussed and unanimously agreed that the petition did not involve an individual action in which his office has full authority to take action. Raksakecha, who is also spokesman of the Office of the Ombudsman, announced that his office, therefore, would be unable to forward the petition and even its opinions to the Constitution Court to take further action. The spokesman made the remarks after Virat Kalayasiri, a former MP of the Democrat Party, asked the Office of the Ombudsman to revoke the February 2 general election, reasoning that the national poll could not be organised in 28 constituencies in the Thai South due to a blockade by anti-government protesters. Virat claimed in his petition that the February 2 general election, which could not be organised nationwide, could not be transparent, while persistent domestic political turmoil obstructed voters to exercise their right freely.(TNA)
