Photos on Bird Migration On Display In Surabaya

Surabaya, E Java, May 23 (ANTARA) - Some 26 photo works on the activities of nine bird species which migrate to the coastal region of Surabaya have been exhibited at House of Sampoerna (HoS) arts gallery from May 26 to June 17, in Surabaya. In the exhibition was titled "Surabaya Wildlife Photo", wildlife photographer Nurdin Razak said here on Tuesday. He said that four photos from the 26 works are sequential photos that have 3 to 6 photos in one frame. According to Razak, the east coastal region of Surabaya, starting from Kenjeran, Gununganyar until Wonorejo is known as a transit place for several bird species from Kalimatan before they fly off to Australia for 2-3 months. Razak, who is also a professor on Tourism at the Airlangga University (Unair) in Surabaya, said that the sequential photos are preserved for 3-4 years, there`s even sequential photographs where the subject was observed for 1,5 years. "The photos of the birds start from when they begin to date, marry, spawn and give birth. Aiming at the object is simple but waiting for that precise moment takes time, I even came to the coastal region in Surabaya approximately once a week to take my sequential photos," he said. Especially, he added, the sea birds are such sensitive species, which is why it is important to blend in and camouflage yourself within their environment. "If you fail, then you have no choice but return and repeat the next day, but we become familiar to their habits," he said. He also revealed that the 26 photos on display were embedded with a message on the importance of conserving the ecosystem in the coastal region. "The bird droppings are food to marine life, as well as fertilizer for the mangrove," he explained. With a fertile mangrove plantation around the coastal region of Surabaya, the city will be safe from tsunami or other abrasions arising from sea water, as the mangrove will act as a shield for any incoming water. "The coastal region is not only a tourism hotspot for residents of the city, but it also has elements of education as well," he explained.
