PM advises Thai farmers to keep pace with modern changes

BANGKOK, June 4 (TNA) - Thailand observes the National Rice and Farmer’s Day every June 5, when activities are organised to mark the annual event. This year, the interim Thai government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, organised a function at Bangkok's Government House on Thursday, providing an opportunity for leading farmers and representatives of outstanding farmers' organisations to pay a courtesy call on and to receive awards from Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha. Led by Thai Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Amnuay Patise, the awarded farmers and farmers' organisations were suggested by the prime minister at the meeting to constantly keep up with environmental changes and carefully lay out their production plans to reduce risks. To keep pace with the changes, the prime minister advised, Thai farmers in the modern world need to always gain more knowledge in order to earn their living with sufficient income, while consumers must always get quality products from them. As rice is Thailand’s key exported goods, the prime minister recommended that local farmers add value to Thai grains by steadily improving their quality. To resolve problems of Thai farm products, the prime minister pointed out that it must be done comprehensively from production costs to later steps in line with the market mechanism, while rice production areas in each province must be within a national plan on overall production areas of Thai farm products. The Thai prime minister stressed on his government's policy on assisting local farmers by assigning the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and the Ministry of Interior to jointly taking care of them through ensuring sufficient and fair prices of factors of production, covering their rental of paddy fields. Besides, the Thai government has a policy to help strengthen marketing plans of local farmers, through cooperatives, community businesses or small enterprises, and to speed up completing a national water management plan by 2017.
