PM confirms Thai exports of rice to China

BANGKOK, October 15 (TNA) - Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has confirmed that her government has inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to export a large amount of Thai rice to China annually, but details of the yearly rice shipments to the immense Chinese market have not yet been concluded. Yingluck told journalists on Tuesday that, under the MOU, the rice trade between Thailand and China amounts to 1 million tonnes annually and the Thai Ministry of Commerce has been assigned to conclude the details of the rice trade and prices with Beijing. The Thai prime minister acknowledged that the MOU was a government-to-government deal, but she has not yet known whether the Thai government can start exporting Thai rice to China within this year. Meanwhile, Government Spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi revealed, after the Cabinet's weekly meeting earlier in the day, that the government has published "Modern Thailand" book to be soon introduced and distributed to international leaders, as well as public and private agencies, aimed to promote Thailand's image and products globally.
