PM Najib Receives Courtesy Call From Malaysian Al-Azhar Alumni

PUTRAJAYA, July 16 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak (fourth, left) received a courtesy call from the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates (Malaysia Chapter) at Perdana Putra here, Wednesday. The half-hour meeting was attended by seven Malaysian alumni of the Al-Azhar University (al-Azhar) in Egypt, led by its president Dr Mohd Fakaruddin Abdul Mukti. Mohd Fakaruddin said the meeting, among other things, discussed the importance of the relationship between science and Islamic missionary endeavors, as well as the role of the leading Islamic education insititutions in spearheading the 'wasatiyyah' (moderation) movement. He said the Al-Azhar Alumni also urged Malaysians to support the country's leadership, for it to remain stable and robust. "Islam embraces issues with the community and the country, and places the leadership with the highest trust, whereby any disruption to the line of leadership without norms, ethics, the spirit of fraternity and etiquettes of negotiation, can be divisive and cause instability, which is detrimental to all parties. "Islam not only prohibits disorder and disunity, but also prohibits the action or allowing the causes which could lead to such problems," Mohd Fakaruddin told reporters after the meeting. He said during the meeting with Najib, they also stressed the importance of strengthening the relations between Malaysia and Al-Azhar, which was founded in 975 AD. According to him, the association also suggested that an Al-Azhar alumni convention be organised in the country, to unite efforts in upholding the wasatiyyah concept as the main pillar among Muslims in the country. He said the association also suggested that the government build a dormitory specially for Malaysian students at the Al-Azhar campus, so that they do not face lodging or security problems. There are now more than 5,000 Malaysian students taking up various fields of Islamic studies at the university, while another 6,000 are in the medical field.(photoBERNAMA) -- BERNAMA
