PM orders revamp of security structure

BANGKOK, September 2 (TNA) -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had assigned Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon chair a new committee tasked with improving and integrating security-related data and facilities including a biometric system and Interpol data to better identify criminal suspects. Anusit Kunakorn, secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC), said Thailand was an open country to benefit from tourism but in the meantime it could attract criminal gangs, so it needed effective security systems and special equipment to ensure security. Mr Anusit said Gen Prawit's committee would form a sub-committee to develop a biometric system to collect physical and other data of people including their iris images, DNA profiles, birth and vehicular registrations and criminal records. Security-related work would be restructured and the change would also include a better data base of immigration police nationwide and links with Interpol data, said the NSC secretary-general who is also the secretary-general to Gen Prawit's committee.
