PM urges Thais to uphold "12 core values"

BANGKOK, January 3 (TNA) - Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has called on all Thai people to promote and uphold the so-called "12 core values" his government has publicised. Speaking to the public during his weekly address on Friday night, the prime minister acknowledged that, like other countries worldwide, materialism is prevailed in Thailand, with younger generations concentrating on the Internet, including online games and various forms of social media, causing rare conversations between the children and their parents. Without a proper care, the prime minister cautioned, the youngsters could be misled to social ills, such as narcotics, violence and stealing, there is, therefore, a need to build “consciousness and understanding” in the daily life for the young citizens through the "12 core values". The prime minister suggested if the "12 core values are promoted and widely upheld, people will feel ashamed and will not commit misdeeds. The "12 core values" include upholding Thailand's three main institutions, including the nation, the religions and the monarchy; being honest, sacrificeable and patient with positive attitudes for public interest; being filial piety towards parents, guardians and teachers; being eager to learn and widen knowledge directly and indirectly; conserving Thai traditions and cultures; upholding morality, integrity, considerateness, generosity and sharing; understanding and learning of true democratic principles with His Majesty the King as the Head of the State; respecting rules and laws and the elderly; being conscious and mindful of actions in line with His Majesty the King’s advice; applying His Majesty the King’s Sufficiency Economy Principle to the daily life, economising for a time of need, being moderate for the sake of business expansion, keeping physical and mental strength not to bow to the evil power or desires, being ashamed of misdeeds in accordance with religious principles; and prioritising public and national interest, rather than individuals' interest.
