PM:Thailand will not be a transit point for nuclear weapons

SEOUL, March 27 (TNA) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra insisted Tuesday that Thailand will not be a transit point for nuclear weapons and her government will protect Thai people from nuclear terrorism. Yingluck delivered the message at the Nuclear Security Summit 2012, held in Seoul, South Korea's capital, with leaders of 53 countries and four relevant international organizations under the theme of “Beyond Security Towards Peace”. Yingluck told the session that Thailand is a center of trade and transportation in Southeast Asia but the Thai Kingdom will never be used as a transit point for nuclear weapons, affirming that her government will protect local people from nuclear terrorism, as Thailand is aware of nuclear threats against national economic development and trade, as well as the establishment of a single community among member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in which Thailand is a member, by 2015. Yingluck also confirmed that Thailand has been fully abided by resolutions announced by the the UN Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including tests for radioactivity, safety measures for the transportation of cargo containers at major ports, a project to be a center for the examination of nuclear evidence and the networking of nuclear and radiation safety among Southeast Asian nations. The Nuclear Security Summit 2012, the second of its kind, addressed national measures to promote nuclear-related security, including the reduction in the use of enrished uranium and the capability of tracing nuclear weapons. The participating world leaders were scheduled to endorse the Seoul Communiqué at the end of the summit. (TNA)
