Police step up security measures for Hat Yai’s business areas

SONGKHLA, May 16 (TNA) - Malaysian and Singapore tourists have flocked to Hai Yai’s business district in this southern province of Songkhla over the weekend despite reports of bombings in adjacent province of Yala this week. Barricades have been set up in front of shops to prevent parking of suspicious vehicles and possible untoward incidents. Pol Maj Gen Amphon Buarubporn, commander of the Songkhla provincial police said that patrol units have worked more frequently in the business areas. At least 30 checkpoints have been set up daily on roads, heading to the provincial seat. He added defense volunteers have been deployed to patrol the town’s center to boost confidence of local residents and tourists. (TNA)
