Post-Flood Aid : China Donates 3,000 Beds, Mattresses Worth US$1.5 Million

PORT KLANG (Selangor, Malaysia), July 24 (Bernama) -- The Chinese government Friday contributed post-flood assistance worth about US$1.57 million (RM6 million) to victims nationwide, especially in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. A donation of 3,000 units of beds and mattresses were presented by the Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Wu Zhengping to the Head of the Post-Flood Recovery Unit in the Prime Minister's Department, Nik Ali Mat Yunus. Wu said the contribution was the second and final one from China in aid of the victims of the flood disaster that hit the country end of last year after the first assistance of tents was distributed in January. The contribution of beds and mattress arriving this month is seen as a gift in conjuction with the Aidilfitri celebrations for the flood victims, said Wu. Meanwhile, Nik Ali said the aid was expected to be distributed to victims at the latest by next week and August. He said the beds made of wood and iron are of high quality with 'queen' sized mattresses made in China. "This assistance is the result of the close ties Malaysia has with the Chinese government," he told reporters here. -- BERNAMA
