Prison sentences for using explosives in terror acts

Manama, Apr 28 (BNA): Chief of Terror Crimes Prosecution Isa Al-Ruwai stated that the Fourth High Criminal Court had issued rulings against 30 individuals accused of carrying out explosions, possessing explosives, training on the use of explosives, promoting the use of explosives in criminal acts, participating in an illegal rally and possessing Molotov bombs for terrorist purposes. Al-Ruwai said that the court sentenced eight defendants to life in prison, one defendant to ten years and 20 other defendants to five years. He added that the court ordered the revocation of the Bahraini nationality of the first and thirtieth defendants, a fine of BD3,000 on the twenty-first defendant, as well as the confiscation of the seized items. He said that on September 28, 2014 a group of individuals illegally rallied in Al-Diraz village, blocked the street and attacked the police with Molotov bombs that damaged a shop. The Criminal Investigation Department launched investigations that led to the arrest of the first, second, third, seventh and tenth defendants who were referred to the Public Prosecution and a warrant was issued for the arrest of the remaining defendants. The Public Prosecution based its charges on testimonies, the defendants' confessions, witnesses' statements and forensic evidences. All the defendants were referred to the Fourth High Criminal Court which reviewed the case in the presence of their lawyers. The defendants have the right to challenge the verdicts before the Court of Appeal in accordance with the deadlines prescribed by the law if there is a legal ground to support their appeal. Under the Bahraini judicial system, defendants have the right to challenge the verdict issued by the Court of Appeal before the Court of Cassation.
