Progress in flood prevention at Thai industrial sites

AYUTTHAYA, July 23 (TNA) - Earth embankment being under construction to prevent floods at the Saha Rattana Nakorn Industrial Estate in Thailand's central Ayutthaya Province during the ongoing monsoon season is expected to be complete within this month. Chakkarat Lertopas, Deputy Governor of the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand or IEAT, told reporters on Tuesday (Jul 23) that investment for the earth embankment with the additional height of 50 centimetres and five kilometres long is about 40 million baht and it will be used temporarily to prevent floods at the Saha Rattana Nakorn Industrial Estate, which was devastated by the country's flooding crisis in late 2011. Chakkarat acknowledged that a permanent embankment, which is made of concrete, at the industrial estate is expected to be complete by August 2014, sponsored two-thirds of the total bill by the government, or over 200 million baht, and that the permanent floodwall will carry the same height as the earth embankment, but it is seven kilometres in length as specified by the IEAT. According to the deputy IEAT chief, after the completion of the permanent embankment, the Saha Rattana Nakorn Industrial Estate and its adjacent areas, including local farmlands, are foreseen to be safe from floods. Permanent embankments are also now almost complete at two other major industrial estates, including the Hi-Tech and Bang Pa-in Industrial Estates, also in Ayutthaya and severely damaged by the late 2011 massive flooding.
