Public hearing held in Thai South on new coal-fired power plants

SONGKHLA, THAILAND, July 27 (TNA) - A public hearing on proposed plans of the state-run Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to construct two new coal-fired power plants in the southern Songkhla Province, near the Thai-Malaysian border, is held from July 27-28 amid tight security measures. As the public hearing on the construction of the Thepha coal-fired power plant first kicked off on Monday morning, local police imposed tight security at the venue, the Pak Bang Sub-district Administrative Organization Office. More than 10,000 stakeholders, including local villagers and religious leaders, are expected to attend the first-day public forum alone. The public hearing will be continued on July 28 on the construction of the Tha Rua coal-fired power plant, also in Songkhla, amid similarly-intensified security measures. Last week, Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha accepted a three-point demand submitted by opponents of a coal-fired power plant in the southern Krabi Province, also proposed by EGAT, following days of hunger strike and a huge demonstration by native people.
