Qatar Condemns Human Rights Abuses in Iraq

Geneva, September 01 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has condemned human rights violations in Iraq, including killings , war crimes, crimes against humanity, practices of forcible displacement and deprivation of the Iraqi people of their right to live in freedom and dignity. This came in a speech HE Faisal bin Abdullah Al-Henzab , the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva before the 22nd special session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) held here today on the situation of human rights in Iraq in the light of the violations committed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and associated groups. The State of Qatar denounced all ideas and acts committed by extremist groups and militia, stressing that such acts are incompatible with the principles of the Islamic faith, human values and ethics and international laws and norms. Al-Henzab warned that the continuation of violence in Iraq, would not only threaten its territorial integrity, stability and security, but also peace and stability in the entire region. He called on the international community and the new Iraqi government to exert more collective efforts in order to end the state of sectarian divisions, protect the innocent civilians, press ahead with the political process to attain reconciliation and national accord and involve all segments of Iraqi society without exclusion or rejection of any faction. That will achieve the aspirations of the Iraqi people for democracy, freedom, justice and prosperity, and to guarantee the rights of all minorities and sects within the framework of equal citizenship among all the Iraqi people and to limit the presence and impact of the extremist groups, Al-Henzab said. He also called on the international community and the Iraqi government to ensure accountability of all those responsible for human rights violations in Iraq and bring them to justice Concluding, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva said the State of Qatar stresses its keenness on exerting every effort for the realization of peace, stability, justice and development in the region, and to continue the provision of support and humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people.
