Qatar Marks World No Tobacco Day

Doha, May 29 (QNA) - The State of Qatar celebrates the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) which falls on May 31 each year, under the slogan (increase taxes on tobacco ). The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) will implement a number of programs and activities to increase awareness about the damage caused by tobacco and its derivatives. World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. The goal is to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco use across the globe and draw global attention to the global use of tobacco and the negative health effects of tobacco products, which in 2013 led to an estimated 5.4 million deaths worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) designates a theme for the day every year to create a more unified global message for WNTD. This theme becomes the central component of the tobacco related agenda for the year following. For World No Tobacco Day 2014, WHO is calling on countries to raise taxes on tobacco as research shows that higher taxes are especially effective in reducing tobacco use and preventing young people from starting to smoke.
