Qatar Ministry of Environment Celebrates World Metrology Day

Doha, May 20 (QNA) - The Ministry of Environment celebrated Tuesday the World Metrology Day which recognized every May 20th , every year with several activities including specialized workshops on metrology. More than 80 countries celebrate the occasion through the impact of measurement on our daily lives. Each year, World Metrology Day is organized jointly by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), with the participation of the national organizations responsible for metrology. Dr. Mohamed Bin Saif Al Kuwari , the assistant undersecretary for Laboratories and Standardization Affairs said in an address on the occasion that metrology is as old as human civilisation and the ancient civilizations in the Arab region either the Ancient Egyptians or the Assyrians down to the Islamic civilization were the forerunners to pay attention to such an art which was clearly vivid in their remaining heritage and monuments. The State of Qatar , Dr. Kuwari said has been keen since its inception to apply and revitalize a national metrology system based on national metrology textbooks and references and is working to develop them through competent authorities and this came to reality through the Qatar Law No. (21) of 1972 on the standarization of measurements , weights and measures. Concluding his address, Dr. Saif Al Kuwari, said "on May 20 of each year the world celebrates the International Day of metrology, in which 17 world countries have signed the convention meter in 1875, according to which the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) was established in Paris, France .Therefore, we were committed to commemorate such a global anniversary at the national level in affirmation of the key importance of metrology in supporting the development of the pillars of the State of Qatar in 2030. " The Convention placed a framework for global cooperation in the field of Metrology and its commercial, industrial or community applications. The original objective of Metrology was to ensure the uniformity and homogeneity of Metrology's systems and techniques around the world as being importance since 1875 until now, he added. Dr. Al-Kuwari pointed that Qatar has issued a law No.21/ 1972 on unifying and defining metrics, weights and parallels. The law includes the need to compel citizens to use a decimal system of measurement (article 1), and commit the State to match the international prototypes of units (article 4). Then a short movie was projected clarifying and presenting in a simple way the uses of metrology in our daily life activities such as measures, heat measurement units and distance measurement units. It is noted that over the past years, the State of Qatar had obvious international partnership through its membership in the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO), GCC Standardization Organization, as well as the Gulf gathering of Metrology, noting that Qatar has currently applied for the membership of Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). All the remaining monuments around the world of the Ancient Egyptian, the Assyrian, the Babylonian, Greek and other ancient civilizations are a great evidence for that. World's developed countries, as well as those countries that are developing, are providing budgets for global scientific institutes specialized in Metrology. He talked about the interest of Qatar in Metrology since establishment. He indicated the need the importance in each country of having a good quality base, accreditation body, certificates accreditation body and another body to do the work of testing as in the laboratories of the Ministry of Environment, in addition to Metropology body. The establishment of the National Scientific Metrology Institute considers the top goal for all activities of industry, quality and Metrology in the State to complete this quality base within the framework of Qatar National Vision 2030.
