Qatar Primary Materials Company Announces Operation of Lusail Port

Doha, August 05 (QNA) - Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) has announced the operation of Lusaid Port after the completion of the expansion operations which increases the capacity of the port to 3 million tons per year in order to serve the large construction movement in the city. QPMC said in a press statement that Lusail Port is one of the Company's largest projects. The project consists of two phases: the first phase included infrastructure works to expand the berth of the port. The work took about seven months to be completed in August 2013. The second phase included the implementation of the top of the berth which was completed in May 2015. Lusail Port has been equipped with the most modern means of transportation and storage of various construction materials. A hydraulic lift bridge has been installed to facilitate the transfer of materials from the ships to the port and then to the car fleet. Commenting on the event, QPMC Chairman Eng. Abdulaziz Al Ansari said that the company continues to grow to create more projects aimed at ensuring the provision of key building materials in various parts of the State of Qatar which is witnessing a boom in the implementation of major projects particularly in the infrastructure sector. He said that the creation of an extra berth at the Lusail port was planned to increase its capacity in order to import gabbro rock and other bulk materials used in building and construction operations in Lusail City and the surrounding area. For his part, QPMC Chief Executive Officer Issa Al Hammadi underlined that Lusail Port is one of the most important ports in the country as it meets the needs of the large-scale projects in the City. Its former capacity was about 500 tons per hour, and with the new expansion, the handling and unloading capacity of the port rose to about 1,000 tons per hour, and it is aimed at reaching a discharge capacity of 3 million tons per year throughout an operating period of up to 10 years. QPMC is well positioned to supply the local market with reliable, effective and high quality solutions for the transport, storage and delivery of a range of primary materials in Qatar in line with the country's developmental aspirations. The cement silos being developed by QPMC in Messaieed have been designed to discharge 2 million tons of cement per year with the total storage capacity of 60,000 cubic meters. Once operational, the plant equipped with the cutting edge technology, will be able to load 1,200 tons of cement per hour in trucks, which will significantly reduce truck loading time and improve the cost efficiency and handling capacity of the port significantly thanks to the conveyor belts and silos facilities. The high rate of discharge capacity from ships will also be reducing ships waiting time as the facility will operate on a 24/7 basis. Meanwhile, QPMCs conveyor belt project is expected to be completed in October 2015. Once this work is over, the company's total capacity will go up to 35 million tons per annum from the existing 22 million tons, a significant increase of 13 million tons. QPMCs belt conveyor project is one of the largest in the Middle East, the first of its kind in the region and one of the mega projects in the world in this area. Belt conveyors are being set up for up to 5 kilometers starting from the port leading to the storage area using the latest equipment. 4,000 trucks per day will be operating around the clock to deliver gabbro all over Qatar. Considering that Qatar's construction sector boosts a diverse portfolio of infrastructure projects in the Northern part of the country, QPMC has set up four floating jetties in Ras Laffan to supply the needed primary materials without affecting road traffic. The project consists of four floating docks that accommodate four containers with a handling capacity of 12,000 tons each, with total port receiving capacity of 7.8 tons a year, pointing out that the port operates around the clock and boasts a gabbro storage area of 1,800,000 meters.
