Qatar Reaffirms Importance of Yemen's Stability for the Region

New York, September 27 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has reaffirmed the importance of the stability of Yemen for the region and for the Arab Gulf states, stressing on the necessary to preserve the unity of Yemen and its territorial integrity and stability, as well as ridding it of terrorism and upholding the achievements of the national dialogue and the implementation of its outcome as a road map for the transition of Yemen to a democratic state. This came in a statement delivered by HE the Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, before friends of Yemen group's meeting, on the sidelines of the general debate of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.    In the last three years Yemen made great strides in the political transition and saw positive developments, His Excellency said, pointing to the conclusion of the national dialogue and the formation of a committee to draft the new constitution.    He added that Yemen still faces imminent danger due to several challenges, including the escalation of violence, the deterioration of the economic situation, as well as threats caused by terrorism and threats to peace, security and stability posed by armed groups out of the government control.     His Excellency reiterated the need for full implementation of the GCC initiative and its executive mechanism, the importance of the rule of law and the building of national institutions and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms of all the people of Yemen, the need for national dialogue led by Yemenis themselves and a national consensus between the Yemenis, and to counter attempts to undermine stability, national reconciliation and political transition. He continued by saying that the State of Qatar supports all that could establish a national consensus, noting that Qatar donated $350 million for compensation fund for the southerners.   HE the Assistant Foreign Minister emphasized that the Security Council should assume its indispensable role under its mandate, adding that Qatar welcomed the Security Council resolution 2140 (2014), which imposes sanctions on those who would block this transition process. "It is important that the Security Council takes decisive action against spoilers of political process, whoever they are," His Excellency said, calling for the support of the Yemeni government's efforts in the fight against terrorism and addressing the escalation in Yemen as well as in ensuring respect for human rights and strengthening the authority of the state, while urging regional and international support for Yemen in preserving stability and security and development. HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani also hailed the efforts of Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Yemen Jamal Benomar. (QNA)
