Qatar Reaffirms Support to Countries' Accession to Legal Instruments of Nuclear Security

Vienna, September 16 (QNA) - The State of Qatar reaffirmed its support to efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to facilitate countries' accession to international legal instruments related to nuclear security, noting that it participated in some of these activities and touched their enormous benefits and now is currently considering issue of accession to the 2005 Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM). Speaking at a meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under item (5) nuclear security in September 2014 , HE Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, Qatar's Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, expressed Qatar's appreciation to the IAEA's efforts in the field of nuclear security, which were detailed in the report of IAEA Director General and acknowledgement of central role of the IAEA in promoting nuclear security framework at national level and in leading the work related to the coordination of the nuclear activities in the field of nuclear security. He added that responsibility for nuclear safety lies entirely on every State and the global dimension of the issue is gaining increasing attention from the international community and its organizations, asserting that nuclear security has become a common responsibility to the international community as a whole and require to be addressed at its national and international levels. Qatari Permanent Delegate to the United Nations, called for intensifying efforts in order to expand the participation of developing countries in IAEA's projects and researches related to nuclear security as they help developing countries to obtain the sustainable nuclear security systems and their development. He called for strengthening the initiatives and the regional and subregional activities of organizations in the field of nuclear security. Al-Mansouri stressed that nuclear security is an important element in the system of international peace and security , therefore, the quest for the full implementation and the overall obligations of States in the field of non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament will contribute to the strengthening of nuclear security, noting that effective national nuclear security systems will contribute to the development of peaceful uses of nuclear energy and promoting international efforts to combat nuclear terrorism. Concluding, he expressed his hope that the relationship between nuclear security and international peace and security would be tackled during ''our discussions and in our future plans to achieve the goals and priorities of the main program in the field of nuclear security.''(QNA)
