Qatar Stresses Need for International Cooperation and Coordination in Fight against Crime

Vienna , October 06 (QNA) -The State of Qatar has affirmed that the criminal challenges being faced today are mostly cross-borders but has become borderless such as terrorism , drugs , psychotropic substances, money laundering , smuggling of migrants , crimes against the environment , trade of human organs , cybercrime and trafficking of peoples' cultural property and many others. Qatar stressed that whatever our strict and firm national policies in fighting against crime ,they remain incomplete if not accompanied by regional and international cooperation and coordination based on shared responsibility and common interest. It asserted that the international , regional cooperation and joint effort to develop approaches and tools are suitable to reduce the risk of these crimes which had become a major impediment to economic growth and a direct threat to social peace in the recent years . The remarks were made by HE Major General Dr. Abdullah Yusuf Al-Maal, legal advisor to HE the Minister Interior at the seventh session of the conference of the parties to the UN convention against transnational organized crime, currently being held in Vienna. Al-Maal noted that the conference provides a unique opportunity to review the joint efforts in implementing this agreement as a framework for common international action to eliminate the scourge of organized crime, which kills its societies and impedes development, especially this conference comes a few month before convening the13th United Nations congress on crime prevention and criminal justice, which was held in Qatar, that would work out rules in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice for next five years.    He added that in his capacity as chairman of the governmental experts meeting, which was held in Doha from 27 to 29 September , 2014, he highlighted some conclusions about this important meeting.   Dr. Al Maal pointed out that Qatar had taken the initiative to hold the international experts meeting as part of its preparations for hosting the 13th United Nations congress on crime prevention and criminal justice, stressing an initiative to receive a wide response, where a group of distinguished ambassadors and experts from 42 countries participated in the meeting, from all regional groups in addition to the UN office of the 23rd session of the commission on crime prevention and criminal justice and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.    He explained that the conferees had exchanged views on the recommendations that would facilitate deliberations of the 13th congress especially in the two main themes such as relationship between crime prevention and the development plan 2015, and the proposed elements of a draft final declaration of the conference ( Doha Declaration).(QNA)
