Qatar University Holds Astronomy Conference

Doha, September 09 (QNA) - The ASTROCON 18 conference will be held in Doha on September 14 and 15, with the participation of experts, scientists and researchers from various countries around the world, as well as specialists, academics, students and interested academic and research institutions within Qatar. It is the only conference in the State of Qatar that deals with astronomy and space exploration. It is organized by the Astronomy Club at Qatar University (QU) in cooperation with the Astronomy Chapter of QU Alumni Association and sponsored by the US Embassy in Qatar and Qatar Youth Hostels. The participants will discuss the latest developments in astronomy, astrophysics and space science, as well as various topics under the theme of 'space discovery'. QU Assistant Vice President for Student Services and Activities Dr. Abdulla Al Yafei said in a press conference on Sunday that ASTROCON 18 is the first conference concerned with astronomy and space to be held in Qatar. It is a scientific platform that brings together about 250 scientists, experts and interested students from Qatar and beyond, he added. Dr. Al Yafei pointed out that ASTROCON 18 brings together local and global influential figures in astronomy and physics to present the most important experiences and expertise in astronomy. He noted that the conference is the largest platform to discuss the latest developments in astronomy, astrophysics and space sciences. Last year, QU hosted the first edition of ASTROCON 17, which came in line with the university's vision to spread astronomy and raise awareness of its importance among university students and Qatari society in general. QU also aims at introducing astronomy, its historical aspects, its immediate and future importance, and clarifying its relationship with various sciences such as philosophy, medicine and the rest of science.
